BOSCOMBE DOWN

Boscombe Down is well served, in modelling terms. We have a MoD club, to which all the RAFMAA members belong, which has an excellent agreement with the airfield management, allowing us to fly at any time when "military ops" are not taking place. Because of the size and geography of the airfield we are able to fly along side the full size University Air Sqn, and the private flying club; a fairly unique situation.

Within 15 miles of Boscombe we have two slope soaring sites that are exclusively for our use, and within 25 miles, a great many more hills. We also have regular indoor meetings, in a local school hall, which allows those interested in miniature R/C to do their thing. The club boasts three instructor/examiners, and there are always new members progressing towards their BMFA certificates. On a monthly basis, we have a non-flying evening, where club business is discussed, usually followed by a presentation of some sort.

Our membership currently stands at about 50, of which 15 are Servicemen. Considering the fact that we are one of the smallest RAF units, we have one of the largest RAFMAA memberships. Our club membership includes such dignitaries as Pete McDermott, Ian Bryant and Richard Crapp, of F4C (Scale) fame. We also have several gas turbine operators, who appreciate the vast expanses of tarmac. Each year we host the F4C British team trials.

Any RAFMAA member, "resting" modeller, or new flyer can be sure of a warm welcome at the BDMAC.

CHIVENOR   North Devon

Since it closed as an active airfield the RAF numbers at Chivenor are now a mere 100 or so made up entirely of the SAR helicopter flight and supporting personnel.

The club has about 8 paid up members and most are active.

I am the O i/c and fly a mixture of thermal and slope gliders with the occasional fun-fly power. There are 4 other aircrew who mainly fly helicopters (predictable!!) plus a couple of ground crew who tend to fly large scale.

Chivenor airfield is now owned by the Marines and about a quarter of the runways and taxiways have been fenced off and turned into a huge vehicle park. Nevertheless there is plenty of space for the modellers and we can fly at any time providing we liaise with our ops room for SAR helicopter movements. We take a hand held radio with us on to the flight line to cater for 'scrambles'. At the weekends we have to share the airfield with the Air Training Corps who operate motorised gliders but we manage to operate together and stay out of each other's way.

We have coastal slope sites within 5 miles that will cater for most wind directions except East.

A local civilian model club also uses the airfield mainly at weekends. The club is headed by Chris Golds of Quiet & Electric Flight fame and you will often see our yellow helicopter in the background of many of his pictures.

COLTISHALL  North of Norwich, Norfolk

The RAF Coltishall Model Aircraft Club comprises 22 members, mainly Service but with a good representation of retired RAFMAA members. We have an excellent flying site on one of the ASPs at the side of the main runway and share the site with the Norwich Model Aircraft Club (NMAC) who have approx 70 members. They also provide a control caravan which is extremely useful in the winter as the East wind blows very cold; moreover the link with the NMAC gives us access to their second flying site at North Elmham (formerly RAF Swanton Morley airfield) when the Coltishall airfield is active. The airfield is also shared with the Coltishall Flying Club and we have a set of well-versed de-confliction procedures in place. There is a large range of models flown from small electric through to ¼ scale and helicopters; there is also one Jet that makes a regular appearance. Both clubs are currently organising a Battle of Britain Fly-in to be held on Sunday 14 Sep and we are hoping to have goodies such as a 1/3 scale Spitfire and a 16’ span Liberator on the day. The current OIC, Sqn Ldr Steve Sharpe is posted shortly to Gibraltar and is planning to start a RAFMAA club on the Rock so if you are visiting the Rock and wish to fly contact him, after 3 Aug, on Ext 5696.

If you are passing by in the neighbourhood, give us a call and come down and fly. If you need any further info contact:

CONINGSBY  East of Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

As Coningsby is once again becoming a major flying station and more and more people are being posted in, I thought it about time to spread the word about our fledgling club here. Up until very recently model flying at RAF Coningsby had completely evaporated along with all traces of the club that must have previously existed. In an effort to rectify this situation, Dan Platts organised the implication of a model flying club. This has received the full backing of SATCO and OC Ops and we have managed to effectively compensate for the existence of ‘Q’ and BBMF’s spurious flying programmes. So far we have 10 + members and have played host to the Jet Modellers Association as well as pioneering the Annual RAFMAA Warbirds event.

We aim to operate a completely flexible and friendly RANK FREE regime, providing as much assistance to other members as possible, especially with regards to coaching newer flyers. So far we have a good mix of fixed wing and rotary flyers. We have recently gained the use of a model storage and building facility on unit which aides our members significantly.

We have scope for using any of three different flying sites around the airfield so we can effectively compensate for any wind conditions, etc.

As the club is still in it’s infancy, I am completely open to any suggestions from any interested parties as to how we may best grow and become more successful and I am sure that as the Typhoons continue to roll in their numbers, a great many more people will be posted in and subsequently our numbers will swell.

Please make available my contact details to any interested flyers who may be posted to Coningsby or the surrounding area.

Since the formation of Joint Force Harrier it was only a matter of time until the RAF Cottesmore and RAF Wittering clubs became one.

The amalgamation of the two clubs took place mid 2002 and the membership numbers have grown from strength to strength.

We can fly on either site providing that the full sized toys are not flying during the week and all weekends (weather permitting!!).

 cott photo.jpg (15622 bytes)

We regularly host the British F3D pylon racing team and the GBRCAA, who make good use of the 5 model runways at RAF Wittering, and the large flying site at RAF Cottesmore with the GBRCAA Championships to be held there at the end of September.

Plans are in place to arrange a Wittering Winter Fly-in for all RAFMAA members to which everyone is cordially invited. More details to follow.

At the club we have all disciplines of model flying from Glider to Jet jockeys and all that is in between. We also have a R/C car circuit at the RAF Wittering site, which is mainly for the kids, although, a few of the more senior members have been seen to have a quick blast around the track!!!

 CYPRUS

crossland.jpg (26309 bytes)Hi,just a quick note to let you know that model flying is alive and well out here in RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, following the last newsletter.

My name is Steve Crossland and although there is no flying on the base, there are two of us that fly just for fun out here, and the power site is the local dryed out Salt Lake (well it's a bit wet at the moment after recent rain) where the local Cypriot model flying club, of which I am a member, have put up some tables and shade (vital mid summer). The area is a vast flatland, and you are spoilt for landing sites, but it is very unforgiving, with the added bonus that any salt left on your engines etc. corrodes like wildfire.

There is also excellent cliff slope soaring sites nearby, in particular 'Curium' with a suberb view over the sea, and ancient relics where I also learned to Paraglide last summer. Here, my 'Zagi' foam flying wing is perfect as it's indestructable and can be 'crash' landed any where on the rocky edge. crossland2.jpg (36984 bytes)

My power models consist mainly of a range of ARTF models assembled out here, and am presently wondering whether to strip them and just bring home the engines and gear, and start again, or risk trying to pack them and bring them home on return in July. I know Martin Paffet well, as we were together on my last posting at Boscombe Down, where he introduced me to the RAF Champs, but he had to dash off for some small reason, (I think his daughter was about to be born or something).

I hope to attend the RAF champs again (possibly this year!!) Or at least sometime during my last few years in the RAF.

See you Steve Crossland

NOTE: Steve is no longer in Cyprus. However the information is current. Just turn up on the salt lake at the weekend, especially Sunday morning and you will be sure to make some new modelling firends.

As soon as I get the name of a good contact in Cyprus I will update this notice. (Ed)

WYTON  Nr Huntingdon

The RAF Wyton RAFMAA Model Aircraft Club operates from RAF Wyton airfield.  The airfield is primarily used for Air Experience Flight and University Air Squadron flying using Tutor aircraft operated under contract to the MOD (0800 to 1700, 7 days a week).  Outside these times, during daylight hours, the airfield is available for use by the Pathfinder Flying Club, the Meridian Microlight Club and the Model Aircraft Club (model flying can take place concurrent with the activities of the full-size recreational aircraft).  In addition to the flying site, the members enjoy the use of a clubroom/workshop situated in Hangar 4.

The membership of this BMFA-affiliated club is usually around 15 (comprising RAFMAA personnel, MOD civilian employees and a small number of other civilians).  Arrangements can be made to escort visiting BMFA flyers.
